Vince Gill Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award: Honored by George Strait with a Powerful Brandi Carlile–Patty Loveless Tribute at the CMA Awards

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vince Gill was honoured over two nights at the Bridgestone Arena during the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award celebrations. The events were part of the 59th annual CMA Awards on Nov. 19, 2025. The Country Music Association recognised the 68-year-old for 50 years of songs, virtuosic guitar work, and quiet influence that have shaped modern country music.

The celebrations began emotionally, with Brandi Carlile kicking off the tribute by performing Gill’s signature ballad, “When I Call Your Name.” She was soon joined by Patty Loveless, delivering harmonies that nearly moved Gill to tears. This performance, hailed online as having fans “in heaven,” set the tone for the rest of the Vince Gill Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award festivities.

Building on the momentum, George Strait—last year’s Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement awardee—then took the stage to enthusiastic applause. He reflected on his longtime friendship with Gill and praised his singing, songwriting, and guitar work before presenting the Nelson-named honour, closing with a heartfelt, “Bravo!”

Gill responded in his typical fashion, with good humour and humility. “I’m pretty sure I must be the only one to ever win it that’s never smoked any weed,” he cracked. He then reflected on Willie Nelson, the CMA community, the Grand Ole Opry, and his family, including his wife, Amy Grant, and their children. Per Country Music Association guidelines, the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award recognises an iconic artist who has earned significant national or international acclaim in country music. Recipients are honoured for multifaceted contributions. These include impact on touring, record sales, philanthropy, and career achievements. The award highlights artists with remarkable careers of over 50 years who have shaped popular culture and perceptions of country and concert life.

The honour has been doled out sparingly in recent years, to legends like Dolly Parton (an “absolute high,” she once called her win), Alan Jackson (“still living that honky-tonk dream, y’all”) and George Strait. Strait was honoured in 2024 with a tribute to his four-decade reign.

Gill’s path to the award was highlighted in a pre-show profile. It noted his 20 albums, 30 million records sold, 45 charting singles, 22 Grammy wins, and 18 CMA trophies. Among those, he holds the record for four Song of the Year wins.

The Oklahoma native first found success in 1990 with “When I Call Your Name.” He later became a prominent figure in country music. He’s hosting the CMA Awards for a 12th time. Over the years, he has received various humanitarian and excellence awards from the association. This fall, he released his retrospective EP series, 50 Years from Home, to commemorate 50 years in music.

Host Lainey Wilson took entertainer of the year, album of the year, and female vocalist. That same night, Gill received a standing ovation to remind him — and us all — that there’s more than one way to win. The night was framed around the Vince Gill Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award. This positioned him not only as a peer of his heroes but also as the newest legend younger artists will salute.
