Angelina Melnikova dropped: German club cuts ties after fierce backlash over pro‑Putin links ahead of Nov. 29 finals

Berlin: German gymnastics club TSV Tittmoning-Chemnitz has withdrawn Russian Olympic and world champion Angelina Melnikova from finals of the Deutsche Turnliga in Heidelberg, just days before the Nov. 29 title meet, due to growing backlash over her presumed support for Vladimir Putin and Russia’s war on Ukraine, Nov. 25, 2025.

Backlash prompts rethink of Angelina Melnikova before league finals

The response was initially reported in a brief release circulated by Deutsche Welle, which said her club severed relations after an outcry over her political profile and wartime messaging that she would not be able to take part in the German league finals. TSV Tittmoning-Chemnitz has so far remained vague in its public comments about the circumstances, with coach Tatjana Bachmayer reportedly stating she’ll elaborate following the conclusion of the finals.

The signing of Angelina Melnikova had already transformed the quiet world of German club gymnastics into a geopolitical flashpoint. In her Bundesliga debut for Chemnitz earlier this month, she was able to dominate with all four events and contributed to the team claiming the top finish, but that performance came amid protests and political criticism after Ukrainian intelligence named her a “champion of terror” regarding alleged pro-war activities in an extensive Kyiv Post report published earlier this month. The mayor of Esslingen also called on the club to dismiss her in an open letter after the final, stating that a sportswoman she accused of supporting a war of aggression should not be presented in this way in Germany.

It’s awful timing for the Deutsche Turnliga. The women’s and men’s champions will be determined at the DTL Finals in Heidelberg, Germany, on Nov. 29 — the league’s showpiece event that organizers had hoped would showcase German teams rather than expose fault lines over Russia’s return to elite gymnastics. Instead, the controversy over Angelina Melnikova and other Russian competitors has shifted from specialist forums to mainstream political debate.

The furor extends beyond the boundaries of a single German club. The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) cleared Angelina Melnikova to return earlier this year as an “authorized neutral athlete” despite her long association with the army-linked CSKA club, a Z-symbol photo from 2022, and a short stint in the ruling United Russia party’s local primaries. The FIG’s backing of Melnikova was referenced as a prime example of blurred neutrality in an investigation by The Guardian earlier in March, which asked how athletes with overt affiliations to Russia’s war machine were being cleared.

The athletic profile of Angelina Melnikova has only made the case more delicate. She is one of the most decorated gymnasts of her generation, with numerous Olympic and world medals, as indicated by her résumé at the Olympics and world championships. In October, she claimed the world all-around title in Jakarta and won as a neutral athlete, a victory that solidified her comeback and was presented as representative of Russia’s overall return to the sport in an October Washington Post profile. Ukrainian officials and advocacy groups have since pushed back, saying that allowing Angelina Melnikova to compete internationally would provide cover for pro-war figures under the banner of “neutral.”

In Germany, those concerns focused on TSV Tittmoning-Chemnitz’s decision to put Angelina Melnikova on the Bundesliga stage. As criticism mounted, including from local politicians and Ukrainian partners of German cities, both the club and league leadership had come under increasing pressure to act. Bachmayer previously defended the signing as a purely sporting decision in comments to DW, as reported by the Kyiv Post, but the club’s backtrack indicates that public and diplomatic pressure was too much to ignore.

Angelina Melnikova has avoided political commentary for the most part in recent weeks. When asked in Germany whether she considered herself a neutral athlete, she refused to respond, according to the Kyiv Post’s reporting. Her withdrawal from Heidelberg is likely to save the DTL Finals from a new wave of protests, but it raises an even larger issue: Can any European club sign Angelina Melnikova now without also buying into a political storm that stretches far beyond the balance beam?
