Messi Kolkata chaos: Police detain organiser after dramatic Salt Lake Stadium unrest; refunds pledged, probe ordered.

KOLKATA, India — Police detained the chief organiser behind Lionel Messi’s ticketed appearance at Salt Lake Stadium after furious spectators tore out seats, threw objects and rushed the pitch when the superstar’s tightly controlled visit ended far earlier than advertised. Officials blamed alleged mismanagement that left many paying fans saying they couldn’t even see Messi, prompting refund pledges and a government-ordered probe, Dec. 13, 2025.

In the Messi Kolkata fiasco, West Bengal police chief Rajeev Kumar said authorities had “already detained the main organiser” and would act so “mismanagement does not go unpunished,” adding that the organiser gave a written assurance that tickets would be refunded, according to Reuters.

Messi Kolkata crowd chaos: what sparked the Salt Lake Stadium unrest

The anger centered on visibility and access. Some fans said the Argentine star was surrounded by a large entourage and security ring that blocked views from the stands, and that stadium screens did little to help. The Associated Press reported that some ticket-holders said they failed to see Messi at all — either in person or on the big screens — despite waiting for hours.

Messi was scheduled to spend about 45 minutes at the stadium, but his appearance lasted roughly 20 minutes, Reuters said. Tickets started at about 3,500 rupees (about $39), with some fans paying far more. As tempers flared, ripped-up seats and bottles flew toward the track, and several people climbed over fencing before police and security forced them back.

“I can’t believe there was so much mismanagement,” said Eddie Lal Hmangaihzuala, who told Reuters he traveled nearly 1,500 kilometers from Mizoram over two days. “Messi left quickly … I hardly got a glimpse of him,” he said.

Refunds promised, organiser held, inquiry set in motion

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee apologized publicly, saying she was “deeply disturbed and shocked” by what unfolded and announcing a committee-led inquiry to assign responsibility and prevent a repeat, Reuters and AP reported.

Bidhannagar Police registered a case and detained Satadru Dutta, the event promoter, as investigators examined alleged lapses and instructed him to refund ticket prices, according to The Telegraph.

By Sunday, a court sent Dutta to 14 days of police custody after he was arrested at Kolkata’s airport as he prepared to leave the city with Messi’s traveling party, The Times of India reported.

The episode now threatens to overshadow the rest of the tour — with scheduled stops in Hyderabad, Mumbai and New Delhi — as authorities try to cool a Messi Kolkata firestorm that erupted from unmet expectations. Officials have not yet spelled out how refunds will be processed, but police said the written pledge is now part of the ongoing inquiry.
