Rob Reiner death: Trump’s scathing post draws condemnation as son Nick Reiner is charged with double murder

LOS ANGELES — President Donald Trump drew swift condemnation Dec. 15 after he posted a scathing message about the Rob Reiner death on Truth Social, as prosecutors charged Reiner’s son, Nick Reiner, with double murder in the stabbing deaths of the filmmaker and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner. The post blamed the killings on Reiner’s supposed “Trump Derangement Syndrome,” prompting bipartisan rebukes that Trump was politicizing a family tragedy, Dec. 21, 2025.

Rob Reiner death and Trump’s post

In the Truth Social message cited by LAist, Trump wrote that Reiner had “passed away” “reportedly due to the anger he caused others” through what he called “TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.” Critics said the language was jarring because authorities were still describing the case as a homicide investigation.

Trump later doubled down in remarks to reporters, saying, “I wasn’t a fan of Rob Reiner at all,” and calling the late director “very bad for our country,” according to Axios.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia was among the Republicans who criticized the president, saying, “This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies,” the LAist report said.

Double-murder charges in the Rob Reiner death investigation

Nick Reiner, 32, appeared in Los Angeles County Superior Court after being charged with two counts of first-degree murder, and he did not enter a plea, according to Reuters. His arraignment was continued until Jan. 7 at the defense’s request. Prosecutors said a knife was used, and they have not publicly announced a motive. If convicted as charged, he could face life in prison without parole or the death penalty; District Attorney Nathan Hochman said prosecutors have not yet decided whether to seek a death sentence.

Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Reiner, 70, were found dead inside their Brentwood home Sunday afternoon, authorities said. The Los Angeles Times reported that officers responded to the home about 3:40 p.m., and that Nick Reiner was arrested later that night near the University of Southern California campus.

Reuters reported that Nick Reiner had publicly acknowledged a yearslong struggle with addiction, and that his experiences helped inspire the 2016 film “Being Charlie,” which he co-wrote with his father. Defense attorney Alan Jackson called the case “a devastating tragedy that has befallen the Reiner family.” Nick Reiner is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

A feud that long predated the Rob Reiner death

Trump’s attempt to frame the Rob Reiner death through a political lens landed on a history of public clashes between the president and the outspoken director. Reiner, who played Mike “Meathead” Stivic on “All in the Family,” also directed films including “This Is Spinal Tap,” “The Princess Bride” and “When Harry Met Sally…” In a 2017 interview at the Dubai International Film Festival, Reiner called Trump “mentally unfit” and “the single-most unqualified” person to hold the presidency, according to a report by Business Standard.

A year later, Reiner escalated his criticism, accusing Trump of “treason” in tweets about U.S. foreign policy and Russia, as reported by Newsweek.

With the court case moving toward arraignment and investigators still working to establish a motive, the Rob Reiner death continues to ripple across Hollywood and politics — and to reignite questions about how leaders speak in moments of private catastrophe.
