Fierce Backlash as Trump-Kennedy Center Signage Goes Up, Testing Federal Law

WASHINGTON — The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts pulled blue tarps across its front entrance Friday as workers installed new Trump-Kennedy Center lettering after President Donald Trump’s handpicked trustees voted to add his name to the building. Supporters cast the rebrand as recognition for Trump’s fundraising and renovation push, while critics say the board is trying to rewrite a congressionally created memorial without Congress, Dec. 19, 2025.

Trump-Kennedy Center signage: what changed and why it matters

The exterior now reads “The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts,” adding Trump’s name ahead of Kennedy’s on the facade and effectively branding the venue the Trump-Kennedy Center. The switch came within hours of the board vote, according to an Associated Press report on the new signage.

Trump said he was “surprised” and “honored” by the board’s action, the AP reported. The Kennedy Center said the move recognizes Trump’s work to revitalize the institution.

How the Trump-Kennedy Center move collides with federal law

The arts complex is not just another nonprofit. Its mission and name are set in federal statute, including provisions that describe it as a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy and restrict additional memorials or plaques in public areas, as laid out in Title 20 of the U.S. Code governing the Kennedy Center.

Critics argue that makes the Trump-Kennedy Center branding legally shaky until lawmakers change the law. Ray Smock, a former House historian, told the AP that changing the name would require revising the 1964 statute. “The Kennedy Center board is not a lawmaking entity. Congress makes laws,” he said.

Backlash from Democrats and the Kennedy family

Democratic ex officio board members and other opponents have described the Trump-Kennedy Center rebrand as illegal and a politicization of a national memorial. Senate Democrats who serve as ex officio members issued a statement calling the renaming effort unlawful.

Reuters reported that the board is now stocked with Trump allies after he reshuffled it this year and installed longtime ally Richard Grenell in top leadership at the center, as workers moved quickly to add the Trump-Kennedy Center lettering to the facade in its account of the rapid renaming.

The Kennedy Center did not respond to an emailed request for comment Friday, the AP said.

Older fights foreshadowed today’s clash

The Trump-Kennedy Center flare-up echoes Trump’s earlier, uneasy relationship with the venue. In his first term, he and first lady Melania Trump broke tradition by skipping the Kennedy Center Honors after some artists threatened to boycott a White House reception, Reuters reported in a 2017 story about the canceled appearance.

When the gala went on without the president later that year, the focus stayed on performers and their work — not politics — a theme reflected in CBS News coverage of the 2017 ceremony.

For now, the Trump-Kennedy Center signage may prove easier to install than to make permanent. The next test could come in Congress, in court or both as opponents weigh whether to challenge the new name as a violation of federal law.
