WASHINGTON — The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and importer F&F Fine Wines International, doing business as Ethica Wines, Nov. 6 recalled about 941,400 bottles of Kirkland Signature Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG sold at Costco stores in 12 states. The Costco Prosecco recall follows 10 reports of bottles shattering or breaking, including one laceration injury, and regulators are urging consumers to stop using the product and seek refunds, Nov. 6, 2025.
Costco Prosecco recall: what shoppers should check
According to a recall notice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the affected sparkling wine is labeled “Kirkland Signature Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG” and comes in a green glass bottle with purple foil and a purple label.
If you’re checking your cart, pantry or holiday stash, the Costco Prosecco recall applies to bottles with:
- Costco item number: 1879870
- UPC: 196633883742
- Where it was sold: Costco stores in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin
- When it was sold: April 2025 through August 2025
CPSC says the prosecco was manufactured in Italy and sold for about $8 per bottle.
What to do if you have a recalled bottle
The key message in the Costco Prosecco recall is simple: don’t try to pop the cork.
Do not open it. Both the agency and Costco warn the bottle can break or shatter, even before opening.
Do not bring it back to the warehouse. Costco’s member letter to affected shoppers says to dispose of unopened bottles rather than return them.
Dispose of it carefully. The same letter says to wrap the unopened bottle in paper towels, place it in a plastic bag and put it in the trash to reduce the risk from broken glass.
Get your money back. The letter says members can receive a full refund by bringing the notice — not the bottle — to their local Costco. Costco also posts product safety updates on its recalls and product notices page.

If you believe you were hurt or have a product-safety issue related to the Costco Prosecco recall, the public can also report incidents through SaferProducts.gov, CPSC’s consumer database.
How this recall fits into a longer pattern
This is not the first time Costco has told members to treat the bottle itself as the hazard. Costco issued an earlier warning in September about the same Kirkland Signature prosecco after reports that unopened bottles could shatter, the Associated Press reported in a Sept. 16, 2025 story.
Glass-bottle safety issues have also surfaced elsewhere in 2025. Trader Joe’s recalled Gerolsteiner sparkling mineral water in March because some glass bottles could be cracked and pose a laceration risk, according to an Allrecipes report.
For now, consumers who find an affected bottle should follow disposal and refund guidance rather than trying to “save” it for a celebration — and share the Costco Prosecco recall details with anyone who may have stocked up during spring and summer.
