SYDNEY, Australia — Australia on Monday brought the broadest phase of its age-restricted internet regime into force, pressing porn sites and other online services to tighten access for minors as major adult platforms limited Australian users and VPN apps surged up download charts, March 9, 2026. Under eSafety’s FAQ on accessing online porn and adult content, the second tranche of the Age-Restricted Material Codes started on March 9 and now applies to designated internet services, relevant electronic services, social media services, app distribution platforms and equipment providers. The regulator says some obligations are staged, with logged-in search engine age-check measures due by June 27, 2026, and some app-store age-assurance requirements due by Sept. 9, 2026.
In an accompanying eSafety media release, the commissioner said pornography sites must ask users to confirm they are adults and that a basic “I am 18 years or older” button will no longer be enough. The same framework reaches services that host self-harm material, some AI companion chatbots that can generate sexually explicit content, and social platforms that permit adult content, while breaches can draw civil penalties of up to A$49.5 million per violation.
The market response was immediate. Reuters reported that three of the 15 most-downloaded free iPhone apps in Australia on Monday were VPN services, while Canada-based Aylo blocked Australians from RedTube and YouPorn and showed a safe-for-work version of Pornhub. The report also said the affected sites were no longer accepting new account registrations in the region.
The Guardian reported that VPN Super Unlimited Proxy, Proton VPN and NordVPN all climbed sharply in Australian app rankings, underscoring how quickly users moved to bypass the new friction. The outlet also said Australian users on X were being prompted to verify their age before viewing adult content, an early sign that enforcement pressure is spreading well beyond traditional porn sites.
How the policy reached this point
The March 9 rollout did not arrive overnight. In September 2025, Reuters reported on a government-commissioned age-assurance trial that found selfie-based age estimation could help enforce Australia’s rules but raised accuracy concerns for people clustered near the age threshold. By December, Reuters reported Australia was ready to switch on its world-first under-16 social media restrictions, establishing the political and technical groundwork for a much wider age-verification regime.
For regulators, the new codes are meant to move online protections closer to offline rules that already keep children out of bars, adult stores and gambling venues. For platforms and users, the harder question is whether Australia age verification will meaningfully reduce children’s exposure to pornography and other harmful material or simply push adults toward VPNs, offshore services and a new round of privacy disputes. That answer is likely to emerge only after the next staged deadlines arrive and enforcement moves from launch day headlines to audits, complaints and fines.
