Trump State of the Union 2026: Bold ‘Golden Age’ Pitch in Marathon Speech Meets Grim Polls Amid Tariff Ruling, Voter ID Fight and Iran Questions

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump delivered the Trump State of the Union 2026 address to Congress Tuesday night, pitching a “golden age” for the country as he pressed lawmakers to back his economic, immigration and national security agenda. The marathon speech aimed to project momentum despite sagging approval ratings, a Supreme Court blow to his tariff strategy, a renewed fight over voter identification and unanswered questions about his next move on Iran, Feb. 24, 2026.

The Trump State of the Union 2026 address lasted about 1 hour and 47 minutes, breaking the record Trump set last year for the longest presidential address to Congress, and included the kind of made-for-TV moments he has long favored, according to a Reuters report on the speech. He leaned heavily on claims that inflation is easing and markets are booming even as many households say the cost of groceries, housing and utilities remains stubbornly high.

Trump State of the Union 2026: ‘golden age’ pitch meets gloomy polling

In the address, Trump repeatedly invoked “the golden age of America” and argued that voters are seeing results from his policies. The full transcript published by The Associated Press shows Trump tying the upbeat frame to the nation’s approaching 250th anniversary, telling lawmakers, “This is the golden age of America.”

But the optimistic tone clashed with polling that suggests many voters remain unconvinced. A Reuters/Ipsos poll released the day of the speech found 40% of respondents approving of Trump’s performance as president, with 61% describing him as having “become erratic with age.” Only 45% described him as mentally sharp.

Democrats, already betting that frustration over prices can flip House and Senate seats in November, used their response to portray Trump’s record as out of step with families’ budgets. Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger, delivering the party’s formal reply, asked whether Trump was “working to make life more affordable” and answered her own question: “We all know the answer is no.”

Tariff ruling and a fast pivot on trade

Trade was one of the sharpest pressure points hanging over the Trump State of the Union 2026 address. Days before the speech, the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that Trump’s broad use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act did not authorize the tariffs he imposed under that statute, narrowing a central tool he has used to pressure allies and rivals.

An analysis by the Council on Foreign Relations said the decision struck down tariffs Trump imposed on imports from Canada, China and Mexico in the so-called “fentanyl orders,” as well as his wider “reciprocal” tariffs. The piece notes Trump quickly pivoted to other statutory authorities, including a time-limited 10% tariff under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 that took effect Feb. 24.

Trump, who criticized the decision in the days before the speech, softened his tone in the House chamber, shaking hands with several justices and calling the ruling “unfortunate” while insisting it would not derail his broader trade agenda.

Trump State of the Union 2026 revives voter ID fight with SAVE America Act push

Trump also used the Trump State of the Union 2026 platform to press Congress to pass the SAVE America Act and to attack Democrats for opposing stricter election rules. In his remarks, he called for voters to show photo identification and to prove U.S. citizenship, repeating claims — disputed by election officials and researchers — that fraud and noncitizen voting are widespread.

A policy explainer from the National Conference of State Legislatures says the bill would require voter registration applicants to provide documentary proof of citizenship and would impose stricter photo ID rules for federal elections than those used in most states. It also outlines how the legislation could preempt state registration processes and add new requirements for mail voting.

The issue has been building for months. In October, a federal judge permanently blocked part of Trump’s executive order that would have required proof of citizenship to register to vote, ruling the president could not impose that requirement by decree, as Reuters reported.

Iran questions remain after the marathon speech

On foreign policy, Trump used the Trump State of the Union 2026 address to offer broad promises of strength but few specifics on what comes next with Iran. “My preference is to solve this problem through diplomacy,” he said, adding that he would never allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon.

He also referenced last year’s U.S. military strike on Iranian soil, code-named “Operation Midnight Hammer,” describing it as having “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear weapons program, according to the transcript. The comments underscored the high-stakes uncertainty around whether the administration will prioritize negotiations, more military action or a mix of both.

A familiar playbook heading into midterm elections

Many of the themes in the Trump State of the Union 2026 speech echoed battles from Trump’s first term — including his reliance on tariffs as leverage. In 2018, Trump imposed 25% tariffs on steel and 10% tariffs on aluminum imports, a move that rattled allies and stirred fears of retaliation, as Reuters documented at the time.

His hard line on Iran also has deep roots. Trump withdrew the United States from the 2015 international Iran nuclear agreement in 2018, calling it inadequate to prevent Tehran from eventually obtaining a nuclear weapon, according to a Reuters report from that year.

With campaigning already underway, the Trump State of the Union 2026 address showed a president doubling down on the issues that animate his base — immigration enforcement, trade pressure and election rules — while betting he can persuade swing voters that his “golden age” pitch matches their lived economic reality.
