Honda Odyssey Recall Triggers Critical Fix for 440,830 U.S. Minivans Over Faulty Airbag Software

WASHINGTON — Honda is recalling 440,830 Odyssey minivans in the U.S. after federal regulators said a software programming error can cause the side and side-curtain airbags to deploy unexpectedly, raising the risk of injury and driver distraction, April 15, 2026.

According to a Reuters report on the recall announcement, dealers will fix the problem by reprogramming the software. That makes this a service-bay repair, but not a minor one, because an airbag that fires when it should not can injure occupants and destabilize the driver in traffic.

Honda Odyssey recall: what owners should do now

Owners should start with Honda’s recall lookup tool, which says safety recall repairs are free at authorized dealers. It is also smart to cross-check NHTSA’s recall database, where the agency notes that some newly announced recalls may take time to appear in VIN searches as VINs are added continuously.

That matters because this is not the kind of defect drivers can easily diagnose in a driveway. The reported problem involves airbags firing when they should not, which can shock a driver, disrupt awareness inside the cabin and create a secondary crash risk.

How the Honda Odyssey recall fits a longer safety history

The new action follows Reuters reporting from October 2025 that NHTSA had opened a probe into about 441,000 Honda Odyssey minivans from the 2018 through 2022 model years after complaints that side airbags deployed while the vehicles were in motion, including after pothole strikes.

The Odyssey had also been part of Honda’s broader airbag problems. In February 2024, AP reported Honda recalled more than 750,000 U.S. vehicles, including certain 2020 through 2022 Odyssey models, over a front passenger seat-weight sensor defect that could affect whether the airbag system was suppressed as intended in a crash.

And the history stretches back further. Reuters reported in September 2013 that Honda recalled about 405,400 vehicles, including roughly 342,000 Odyssey minivans from the 2003 and 2004 model years, after an airbag-control-chip glitch that could trigger inadvertent deployment.

That does not make every Honda airbag problem the same defect, but it does show why Odyssey owners tend to pay attention when restraint-system recalls surface. The practical takeaway now is straightforward: check the VIN, watch for Honda updates and schedule the software repair as soon as your dealer confirms the vehicle is covered.
