Brixton shooting: Urgent police appeal after serious drive-by attack leaves four injured

LONDON — Four people were taken to hospital after shots were fired from a vehicle on Coldharbour Lane in Brixton, with one 25-year-old man left in a life-threatening condition, Saturday, May 2, 2026.

The Metropolitan Police said officers were called at 1:14 a.m. after reports of a firearm discharge and found four people with gunshot wounds, according to The Guardian’s report on the police appeal. Detectives have described the attack as an “act of indiscriminate violence” and are urging witnesses, residents and anyone with phone, dashcam or doorbell footage to come forward.

What police know about the Brixton shooting

The victims were ages 25, 21, 47 and 70. Police said the 25-year-old remained in a life-threatening condition, while the three others had injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing. Sky News reported that specialist crime officers reached the scene within four minutes and gave emergency first aid alongside paramedics.

The London Ambulance Service said four patients were treated at the scene. Two were taken to a major trauma center and two others were taken to a local hospital, according to ITV News coverage of the shooting.

No arrests had been announced. Police said detectives are working to identify those responsible and that residents should expect an increased police presence in the area in the coming days.

Police examine possible link to nearby stabbing

Detectives are also investigating whether the shooting is linked to a stabbing reported about an hour later on Acre Lane, roughly 700 meters away. Officers were called at 2:17 a.m. and found a 33-year-old man with multiple stab wounds. He was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition, ITV London reported in a follow-up.

Police asked anyone with information about the Coldharbour Lane shooting to quote CAD 557/2May. Anyone with information about the Acre Lane stabbing should quote CAD 907/2May. Information can be given to police by calling 101 or anonymously through Crimestoppers.

Brixton shooting appeal follows years of concerns over public gun violence

The latest Brixton shooting has renewed concern because it unfolded in a public area and appeared to involve shots fired from a moving vehicle. Local outlet Brixton Buzz reported from the Coldharbour Lane scene that the road remained cordoned off Saturday while forensic teams worked in the area.

The attack also fits into a longer pattern of London shootings in which bystanders or people gathered in public spaces have been injured. In 2006, two teenagers were shot inside a fast-food restaurant in Brixton, an incident The Guardian later examined in a wider report on youth gun violence titled “Shot for showing disrespect”. In 2008, 18-year-old Ryan Bravo was killed after being caught up in a suspected gang confrontation while shopping, according to The Independent’s coverage at the time.

More recently, drive-by and moving-vehicle shootings have prompted similar public appeals across London. In January 2023, a 7-year-old girl was seriously injured and five others were hurt in a drive-by shooting outside a church in Euston, according to The Associated Press. In May 2024, a 9-year-old girl was left critically injured and three men were wounded after shots were fired from a motorcycle outside a restaurant in Hackney, The Guardian reported.

Community urged to share footage and information

Detective Chief Inspector Allam Bhangoo, who is leading the investigation, said police understand the concern the attack will cause locally and are “working at pace to identify those responsible.”

“This was an act of indiscriminate violence, and we will work relentlessly to bring the suspects to justice,” Bhangoo said.

Police said anyone who witnessed the shooting, saw a vehicle leaving the area, recorded footage near Coldharbour Lane or Acre Lane, or has information about those involved should contact investigators immediately.
