Crans-Montana: Devastating bar blast kills several dozen, about 100 injured, police say — Breaking

CRANS-MONTANA, Switzerland — A fire and apparent explosion tore through a crowded New Year’s celebration at a bar early Thursday, killing several dozen people and leaving about 100 injured, police said. Prosecutors said there was no indication of an attack as investigators began working to determine what triggered the blaze and why it spread so quickly, Jan. 1, 2026.

In an early statement, the Valais cantonal police said a serious incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. at the “Le Constellation” bar in Crans-Montana, adding that the area was closed to the public and a no-fly zone was ordered over the resort while emergency operations continued. Authorities also set up a helpline for families at 0848 112 117.

What happened in Crans-Montana

Officials said the death toll remained preliminary as crews worked to recover victims and identify those killed, a process expected to take time because many of the injuries were severe. In some early accounts, survivors described a sudden blast, while authorities said the event appeared accidental and may have involved a rapid fire escalation that can feel like an explosion.

Reuters reported that about 10 helicopters and roughly 40 ambulances were deployed, with patients transported to hospitals in multiple Swiss cities as emergency rooms and intensive care units absorbed a surge of burn victims. During a news conference, prosecutor Beatrice Pilloud said authorities were treating the event as a fire and were not considering the possibility of an attack.

The Associated Press reported that officials described how a fast-moving blaze can trigger a sudden ignition of combustible gases, producing a violent flashover or backdraft. Authorities said some victims were believed to be from outside Switzerland, reflecting Crans-Montana’s international holiday crowds.

Valais authorities said they were also trying to protect strained emergency resources as the ski season brings heavy traffic to the slopes and roads around Crans-Montana. Swiss Federal President Guy Parmelin offered condolences, and local officials urged residents and visitors to follow instructions, avoid the cordoned zone and minimize unnecessary risks while hospitals remain under pressure.

The Valais government said it had declared a “special situation” to speed coordination and mobilize resources across agencies, according to the canton’s announcement.

In context: earlier tragedies that shaped safety debates

Deadly fires in crowded venues have repeatedly raised questions about exits, flammable materials and enforcement of safety rules. In Romania, the 2015 Colectiv nightclub fire in Bucharest killed 64 and sparked mass protests over alleged official failures, as Reuters reported in 2016. A New Year’s Eve cafe fire in Volendam, Netherlands, also became a touchstone case for nightlife safety after exits were reported blocked amid panic, according to a 2001 Guardian report.

Closer to Crans-Montana, the canton of Valais has faced past mass-casualty crises, including the 2012 tunnel crash near Sierre that killed 28 people, many of them children, as AP reported at the time.

Authorities said updates on the Crans-Montana investigation and confirmed casualty figures would follow as forensic teams complete identification work and investigators are able to safely enter the damaged structure.
