NEW YORK — U.S. District Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall in Brooklyn on Friday overturned Karl Jordan Jr.’s murder conviction in the Oct. 30, 2002, killing of Run-DMC DJ Jam Master Jay, born Jason Mizell. The Jam Master Jay conviction overturned ruling does not resolve the broader case. Prosecutors have said a third defendant, Jay Bryant, helped the gunmen enter Mizell’s Queens studio, and Jordan has maintained Bryant was the shooter. Bryant is scheduled to face a separate trial in January 2026, Pitchfork reported.

The killing of Jam Master Jay went unsolved for years, fueled by witness fears and a tangle of competing theories. Federal prosecutors unsealed an indictment in 2020 accusing Jordan and Washington of murder while engaged in narcotics trafficking, according to the Justice Department.
