Controversial Michael Jackson Biopic “Michael”: Major Rewrite Reportedly Cuts Allegation Scenes and Ends on Bad Tour

LOS ANGELES — The Michael Jackson biopic “Michael,” starring Jaafar Jackson and directed by Antoine Fuqua, has reportedly undergone a major late-stage rewrite ahead of its April 24 theatrical release, with the film now said to end during Jackson’s Bad tour rather than move into the allegations that shaped his later public image. The shift reportedly followed the discovery of a legal restriction tied to one of Jackson’s 1993 accusers, forcing the production to rethink its third act, April 16, 2026.

The reported overhaul centers on the movie’s final act. According to a new Variety report, scenes tied to child abuse allegations were stripped from the film after the production realized it could not legally dramatize or mention 1993 accuser Jordan Chandler. The outlet said the rewrite required additional photography, reportedly adding $10 million to $15 million, and reshaped the ending so the story now closes with Jackson preparing to perform during the Bad era.

That shift was reinforced at the film’s Berlin premiere, where producer Graham King told Reuters he was happy to tell a “celebration story.” Reuters also reported that references to the allegations were removed after the estate’s attorneys concluded an earlier settlement barred that material. Jackson denied the allegations during his lifetime, was acquitted in 2005 and was never convicted of child sexual abuse in criminal court or found liable in a civil case.

Nothing in the official movie site or the official trailer suggests another delay. Both continue to sell “Michael” as a sweeping rise-to-stardom drama built around Jackson’s music, family tensions and stage mythology, even as the conversation around the film is increasingly being driven by what reportedly is no longer in it.

Why the Michael Jackson biopic rewrite matters

If the reporting holds, this is more than a routine post-production adjustment. It redraws the historical boundary of the movie, shifting it from a project once expected to confront Jackson’s most divisive years into one that appears to stop at the height of his fame.

That will likely shape the reception as much as any review. Fans may welcome a music-first chronicle of Jackson’s ascent, while critics are likely to argue that ending on the Bad era narrows the scope of a film marketed for years as a portrait of a brilliant but complicated artist.

How the Michael Jackson biopic got here

The current backlash is the latest turn in a project that has been evolving for years. Reuters reported in 2019 that producer Graham King had secured rights from Jackson’s estate for a feature film, and even then the central question was whether an authorized movie could avoid looking sanitized.

In 2023, The Associated Press reported that Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson had landed the lead role, locking the project into a more intimate, estate-backed framing. By April 2024, The Hollywood Reporter wrote that the CinemaCon first look promised a song-heavy theatrical event, and by July 2025 Billboard reported that the release had shifted again, moving the film to April 24, 2026.

Seen across that timeline, the reported rewrite feels less like a sudden detour and more like the culmination of a long tug-of-war over whether “Michael” would be a full-career biopic or a movie more tightly focused on Jackson’s peak years and creative legend.

What comes next for the Michael Jackson biopic

With the Berlin premiere complete and the marketing campaign in full swing, the debate is no longer just about whether “Michael” can open big. It is about whether a movie that reportedly stops before the allegations becomes a commercial event, a fan celebration or the latest front in the battle over how Jackson’s life should be remembered. That answer will start arriving when the film reaches theaters on April 24.
