MEXICO CITY — A tour bus traveling from Jalisco overturned near Amatlán de Cañas in Nayarit, killing 11 people and injuring 31 during Mexico’s Labor Day holiday weekend, Reuters reported, May 1, 2026.

The bus veered off the highway while passengers were heading to a recreational center in Nayarit, and authorities were still investigating why the vehicle left the road. The Nayarit Attorney General’s Office confirmed through EFE’s report that six people died at the scene and five others died in hospitals.

Mexico bus crash investigation focuses on route and emergency response

The crash occurred on the Amatlán de Cañas, Nayarit-San Marcos, Jalisco, road at kilometer 7+500 near Pie de la Cuesta, local outlet NTV reported. Emergency teams from Nayarit and Jalisco responded, while state mobility officials closed the road so rescuers could secure the scene, assist survivors and support investigators.

Initial reports listed 31 injured, though a later El País report put the injury count at 32, citing updated state information. Authorities said passengers were being treated in hospitals in Nayarit and Jalisco as officials worked to identify victims and notify families.

Jalisco Gov. Pablo Lemus Navarro said his administration would cover funeral, transfer and medical costs for affected families, El Informador reported. Lemus also said Jalisco remained in contact with Nayarit Gov. Miguel Ángel Navarro as both states coordinated support.

Previous Mexico bus crash reports show recurring highway risks

Friday’s crash adds to a series of deadly bus accidents reported in Mexico in recent years. In April 2023, another tourist bus crash in Nayarit killed at least 18 people and injured 33 after a vehicle fell off a cliff on a highway connecting Tepic and Puerto Vallarta.

Months later, an August 2023 Nayarit bus crash killed 18 people when a passenger bus plunged into a ravine near Tepic. In February 2025, a southern Mexico bus crash killed 41 people after a bus collided with a truck and caught fire.

Those earlier crashes do not point to a cause in the Nayarit crash, but they underscore why passenger bus safety, road conditions and emergency response remain recurring concerns across Mexico’s highways.
