Karachi heatwave: Deadly, Critical Scorching Surge Pushes City to Hottest Day Since 2018

KARACHI: A severe Karachi heatwave has pushed temperatures to dangerous levels, triggering multiple suspected heat-related deaths, overwhelming hospitals, and marking the city’s hottest day since 2018 as mercury surged past 44°C amid weakening sea breezes and extreme dry conditions, authorities said, May 6, 2026.

Karachi heatwave intensifies as temperatures cross 44°C

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) confirmed that Karachi recorded temperatures of up to 44.1°C, making it the hottest day in years as hot winds and stagnant atmospheric pressure conditions gripped the coastal city. Health officials and rescue services reported multiple fatalities linked to suspected heatstroke, with victims found across several neighborhoods including Clifton, Liaquatabad, and Baldia.

Authorities said the extreme weather conditions were worsened by a collapse of the sea breeze system, a known factor that intensifies heat stress in Karachi. Similar patterns were observed in earlier extreme weather events, including the 2018 heat surge when temperatures also approached critical thresholds, according to historical PMD data.

Experts note that the current situation mirrors past climate stress events, including earlier severe heatwaves documented in 2024 when Karachi experienced prolonged periods of humidity-driven heat stress and elevated mortality risks as reported during previous extreme heat conditions.

Health emergency as hospitals report suspected heatstroke deaths

Rescue officials confirmed at least eight to ten deaths across the city, though investigations are ongoing to determine exact causes in all cases. Many victims were reportedly exposed to prolonged outdoor heat, with some collapsing in public spaces before being transported to hospitals.

Medical experts warned that heat exhaustion often escalates quickly into life-threatening heatstroke, particularly among outdoor workers, motorcyclists, and vulnerable populations lacking access to cooling systems or hydration.

Authorities had issued early warnings ahead of the heatwave, forecasting temperatures above 41°C and “feels-like” conditions nearing 50°C due to humidity and reduced airflow in prior meteorological alerts. Despite advisories, emergency services have struggled to manage the surge in heat-related incidents.

Recurring climate pattern raises long-term concerns

This is not the first time Karachi has experienced such extreme conditions. The city has faced repeated heat stress events in recent years, including the 2015 and 2018 heatwaves, which also resulted in elevated mortality rates and widespread disruptions. Meteorologists say the recurrence of such events signals a growing climate vulnerability in the region.

Historical reporting shows that Karachi’s hottest periods often occur when sea breezes weaken and high-pressure systems dominate the region, a pattern also observed in earlier documented heatwaves in 2024 highlighting similar atmospheric disruptions.

Experts warn that climate change is increasing both the frequency and intensity of heatwaves across South Asia, with Karachi among the most vulnerable megacities due to its coastal humidity and dense population.

Authorities urge caution as heatwave conditions persist

Officials have advised residents to limit outdoor activity, remain hydrated, and seek shaded or cooled environments during peak daytime hours. Emergency response teams remain on alert as forecasts suggest continued hot and humid conditions in the coming days.

While temperatures may temporarily fluctuate, meteorologists caution that another heatwave episode remains possible later in the month, underscoring ongoing risks for the city’s population.
