Nick Reiner, accused in parents’ killings, faces dramatic setback as star lawyer quits; arraignment delayed to Feb. 23

LOS ANGELES — Nick Reiner, charged with killing his parents in a double slaying that has rattled Hollywood, saw his defense thrown into uncertainty after his high-profile attorney abruptly withdrew and a judge pushed his arraignment to Feb. 23. The sudden shakeup left Nick Reiner temporarily represented by a public defender as prosecutors continue to pursue a first-degree murder case carrying the possibility of life without parole and, potentially, the death penalty, Jan. 7, 2026.

Nick Reiner’s legal team upended as Alan Jackson exits

Defense attorney Alan Jackson, who had been leading Nick Reiner’s case since his arrest, asked to be replaced during the hearing. Jackson did not disclose specifics, citing legal and ethical limits, but insisted outside court that Nick Reiner is not guilty under California law, according to CBS News.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Theresa McGonigle approved the change of counsel and set the next court date for Feb. 23. Deputy Public Defender Kimberly Greene briefly conferred with Nick Reiner in court and declined to discuss defense strategy, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Nick Reiner remains in custody without bail as the case proceeds. The arraignment delay marks the second postponement since the killings, according to Reuters.

What Nick Reiner is charged with

Prosecutors have charged Nick Reiner with two counts of first-degree murder in the stabbing deaths of filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner at their Brentwood home. The filing includes “special circumstance” allegations tied to multiple murders and an allegation that a knife was used, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said in its Dec. 16 announcement of charges against Nick Reiner: statement from the DA’s office.

How the case has unfolded so far

The latest courtroom turn comes after weeks of procedural steps and limited public detail about a motive. Nick Reiner made his first court appearance on Dec. 17, 2025, when the judge allowed cameras in the courtroom but barred images of the defendant; his arraignment was postponed as the defense sought more time, The Associated Press reported at the time.

Investigators have said Nick Reiner was arrested hours after his parents were found dead. Authorities have released few specifics beyond the charging allegations, and the case is expected to hinge on evidence presented at later hearings, including any arguments about Nick Reiner’s mental state and competency to stand trial.

For now, the immediate question is who will ultimately lead the defense: whether Nick Reiner will keep the public defender’s office, seek new private counsel, or pursue a different legal strategy before he is formally arraigned on Feb. 23.
