Savannah Guthrie mother missing: what investigators know

Authorities said Nancy Guthrie was last seen late Saturday night, Jan. 31, and was reported missing Sunday afternoon after family members became concerned when she did not appear for church. Sheriff’s officials have described her as mentally sharp but with limited mobility and in urgent need of daily medication.

Nanos told reporters that his office believes she did not leave voluntarily and urged residents to review home surveillance for anything unusual, particularly overnight into Sunday. In a separate interview, he said, “I believe she was abducted.” Details of the investigation were shared by CBS News and Reuters.

Local reporting described a large initial response that included drones, dogs, air assets and homicide investigators, with the sheriff acknowledging it is uncommon for his office to hold repeated briefings for a missing-person report at this stage. Arizona Public Media reported Nanos asked neighbors near East Skyline Drive and North Campbell Avenue to check doorbell camera footage and to report any suspicious vehicles or activity. AZPM’s account also cited the family’s concern about medication and the growing focus on potential foul play.

In a message shared publicly, Guthrie thanked supporters for prayers and asked anyone with information to contact investigators. ABC News reported authorities believe she may have been taken while asleep.

Why the case is drawing attention beyond Arizona

While the Savannah Guthrie mother missing investigation is being led locally, it has drawn national attention because Guthrie is a longtime broadcast journalist. The family’s ties to southern Arizona are also well known. In October 2025, the University of Arizona detailed Guthrie’s return to campus for a “Today” segment filmed in Tucson. Weeks later, Realtor.com reported she toured favorite hometown spots and visited her mother during that trip.

In earlier interviews, Guthrie has spoken about family hardship and the impact of losing her father as a teenager, including in a February 2024 story published by People.
