Denver airport plane strike: Deadly urgent tragedy as Frontier jet fatally hits trespasser on runway

A Frontier Airlines jet preparing for takeoff at Denver International Airport struck and killed a trespasser late Friday night, triggering a chaotic emergency evacuation and a federal investigation into how the individual breached airport security.

Authorities said Frontier Flight 4345, an Airbus A321 bound for Los Angeles, was accelerating for departure when the person reportedly climbed a perimeter fence and entered the active runway area. The aircraft struck the individual moments later, forcing pilots to abort takeoff after smoke and a brief engine fire were reported. Reuters reported that all 224 passengers and seven crew members were evacuated safely using emergency slides.

Denver airport plane strike sparks emergency response

Emergency crews rushed to the runway area shortly after the collision, while airport operations temporarily shut down the affected runway for investigation.

According to officials, at least a dozen passengers suffered minor injuries during the evacuation, with several transported to local hospitals for treatment. Denver International Airport later confirmed the runway reopened Saturday morning after investigators completed an initial assessment. ABC7 Chicago detailed the emergency response and evacuation timeline.

Air traffic control recordings captured the pilot urgently telling controllers, “We just hit somebody,” moments after the impact. Witnesses onboard described panic inside the cabin as smoke became visible near one engine. Audio obtained by SAN revealed the tense communications between the cockpit and tower.

How the runway breach happened remains under investigation

Airport officials said the deceased individual was not an employee and is believed to have intentionally entered restricted airfield property after scaling a fence surrounding the airport perimeter.

Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration, Transportation Security Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are now examining surveillance footage, perimeter security systems and runway protocols to determine exactly how the breach occurred. The Guardian reported that the person reached the runway within minutes of breaching airport grounds.

Frontier Airlines issued a statement expressing condolences to the victim’s family and praised the crew for safely evacuating passengers during the emergency.

Past airport runway intrusions raise broader safety concerns

The Denver airport plane strike is the latest in a series of alarming runway intrusion incidents that have raised questions about airport perimeter security nationwide.

In 2023, a man was killed after entering a runway area at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport before being struck by a cargo aircraft. In another incident the same year, a passenger breached security fencing at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, prompting temporary runway shutdowns.

Federal investigators have also warned about a growing number of near-miss runway events involving unauthorized vehicles, pedestrians and aircraft movements over the past several years, increasing pressure on airports to strengthen surveillance and intrusion detection systems.

Denver International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the United States, has faced previous scrutiny over perimeter vulnerabilities because of its vast size and remote runway layout.

Passengers recount terrifying moments after impact

Several passengers described hearing a loud thud before the aircraft abruptly slowed during takeoff.

Others reported seeing emergency vehicles racing toward the aircraft as cabin crew ordered an immediate evacuation. One passenger told reporters the scene became “chaotic very quickly” as smoke appeared near the wing area.

People magazine reported that emergency slides were deployed within minutes and firefighters quickly extinguished the engine fire.
