Khamenei Issues Dire Warning: Any U.S. Strike on Iran Would Trigger Regional War as Both Sides Signal Talks

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned Sunday in Tehran that any U.S. strike on Iran would ignite a wider regional war, sharpening a standoff that has seen President Donald Trump move additional U.S. naval forces toward the Middle East, according to a Reuters report, Feb. 1, 2026.

Khamenei’s remarks, carried by Iranian state media, dismissed U.S. threats as ineffective and vowed retaliation if Iran is attacked. “The Americans must be aware that if they wage a war this time, it will be a regional war,” Khamenei said, as The Associated Press reported.

The warning landed amid ongoing international scrutiny of Iran’s crackdown on protests that began in late December. Tehran has put the unrest-related death toll at 3,117, while the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency has reported at least 6,713 deaths; neither Reuters nor the AP has been able to independently verify the figures.

Khamenei warns of a “regional war”

In his speech during ceremonies tied to Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, Khamenei said Iran would not be the initiator of war but would “deal a heavy blow” to any aggressor. Iranian officials have portrayed the protests as a foreign-backed plot and framed U.S. pressure as an attempt to force political concessions.

While Khamenei’s language was directed at deterrence, the message also underscored how quickly any military move could expand beyond Iran’s borders, particularly given the concentration of U.S. forces and key shipping routes near the Persian Gulf.

Tensions rise as both sides signal talks

Despite the rhetoric, both capitals have floated a return to negotiations focused on Iran’s nuclear program. Trump told reporters Iran was “seriously talking” with Washington and said he wants an agreement that ensures “no nuclear weapons.” Iranian officials have said they are ready for “fair” negotiations, but insist talks should not curb Iran’s defensive capabilities, including its missile program.

Trump has also framed diplomacy as a narrowing window, warning on social media that “time is running out” if Iran does not come to the table, according to another Reuters report. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, meanwhile, said Iran remains open to a “mutually beneficial” nuclear deal “free from coercion, threats, and intimidation,” and Tehran’s top security official, Ali Larijani, has said arrangements are being made for talks.

How Khamenei’s warning fits a longer pattern

Khamenei has paired threats of retaliation with messages aimed at resisting pressure during earlier spikes in U.S.-Iran tensions. In May 2019, amid a U.S. sanctions campaign, Khamenei said there would be “no war” with the United States while also ruling out negotiations on a new nuclear deal, according to a Reuters dispatch at the time.

In March 2025, Khamenei rejected U.S. calls for talks that he said would be used to impose limits on Iran’s missile range and regional influence, as AP reported in 2025.

The backdrop also includes the June 2025 Israel-Iran war, when the United States struck Iranian nuclear sites, deepening mistrust and hardening domestic politics on both sides, AP reported at the time.

For now, the biggest question is whether the latest exchange opens a negotiating channel or accelerates another escalation cycle. Khamenei has cast the choice as deterrence, while Trump continues to argue diplomacy is possible — but only under pressure.
